EWIF national conference celebrates women in franchising

Stephanie Davies, the founder of training organisation Laughology, delivered the keynote speech at this year’s Encouraging Women into Franchising EWIF, national conference.

The ex-comedian’s interactive session had the audience applauding, cheering and even attempting cartwheels, all in the name of good business. As a leading voice in the psychology of happiness, she demonstrated how simply smiling more often leads to a more productive workforce.

The Conference

There were franchisors and franchisees in attendance, from across the UK at the Stratford-upon-Avon venue on September 24th 2015. Clive Sawyer, EWIF’s Managing director set the tone for the event, which celebrated and championed the success of women in franchising. Sawyer spoke of EWIF’s history, including the fact that the association was established in 2009 – a time when 25% of franchisees in the UK were women. 6 years on this has risen to 30% compared with 17% in Australia and 20% in USA.

Sarah Carlile, Director of Coconut Creatives, thanked the members of EWIF for the time and effort taken to make EWIF the success it is today.

Volunteers have devoted approximately 3,000 hours of their time to EWIF this year alone. She highlighted EWIF’s growth with one new business joining EWIF each week this year.

Pledges are designed to demonstrate their continued support for EWIF. Delegates were invited to review past pledges from members and submit new ones.

Reed Commercial’s own pledge was to be an active voice for the association by sharing news and updates to raise awareness of the organisation.

A growing number of franchises listed on Reed Commercial are members of EWIF including Jim’s Mowing, Swimtime and Rosemary Bookkeeping.

Regional Support

Each of the five regional EWIF chairs were invited to talk about their regional objectives and progress over the last 12 months.  The most interesting development was that Linda Price, EWIF’s regional chair for the North of England, has started talks with the University of Nottingham in an effort to engage and educate undergraduates about franchising.

Here is a list of regional meetings and organisers across the UK:

EWIF South Regional Meetings –  Anne-Marie Martin & Rebecca Duschl, Diddi Dance

EWIF North Regional Meetings –  Linda Price from Swimtime UK Ltd

EWIF South Regional Meetings – Kate Matthews from Boddy Matthews and Helen Thompson from Wagging Tails

EWIF South West Regional Meetings – Claire Robinson from Extra Help

EWIF East Regional Meetings  – Vicki Mitman from Leathes Prior.
