This is a difficult question and you cannot take a ‘one size fits all’ approach to the working week of a franchisee.
It is wise to consult your chosen franchise business and speak with current franchisees, as they work in and/or on the business on a day-to-day basis. Consult as many franchisees as you can, as a range of opinions will give you the best idea of what to expect with that particular franchise system.
Many franchisees will agree that the first few months require the most time and input as they work on building and establishing their franchise business.
Marston’s pub franchisee, Aaron Stewart, says he initially worked “50 to 60 hour weeks to get the business into good condition”. The business is now established and Aaron’s working hours have since been reduced to between 35 and 40 hours per week.
Four questions to consider:
How many hours do you have available to put into franchising?
- Franchisees share a passion for success which can lead to longer hours spent driving their business forward. Are you willing to go the extra mile and join the 92% of people that succeed at franchising?
What is the lifestyle that you want to achieve as a franchisee?
- There are franchises out there that suit all different lifestyle choices, so whether you long for flexible working hours or prefer a fixed working week, there will be something to suit your needs.
Have you found a franchise opportunity that matches your needs?
- Do your due diligence. Even if you have found an opportunity that appears to suit all of your needs on paper, dig a little deeper to ensure that you have covered all of the relevant details. Ask lots of questions and speak with existing franchisees to get a good understanding of the business time requirements.
Do you have support running the business?
- Are you working alone or with a partner? It is wise to plan for the busiest periods and have people in place to get you through those times.
