Discovery days are a vital step on your franchising journey

It will give you a great opportunity to learn more about the franchise itself and whether you can see yourself running it. Usually, franchisors will offer you the chance to come along to a discovery day, so it is also a way of enhancing the relationship you have already started to form with your franchisor.

We have put together some helpful tips to ensure that you get the most out of your discovery day.

Talk, talk, and talk some more

At the day, you will get the chance to meet your support team. It is important that they give you a sense of confidence and a belief that you can trust in what they are telling you. Yes, website information is always helpful, but speaking to someone face-to-face builds and enhances a connection.

Do not be afraid to ask questions about the franchise. It is a significant investment and visiting the company in person can reassure you that you are making a good investment.

Group vs one-to-one

Franchisors offer both group and individual discovery days. Usually, the individual discovery day comes after the group one, but both will contain important information.

As the name suggests, group discovery days gather a number of franchisees together for a presentation about the opportunity and how it works before moving into smaller groups. It is also worth pointing out here that though they are slightly different formats, franchisors may not specify what type of day you will be attending so it is worth asking for clarity here.

Be honest with yourself

Ask yourself before you head off what you hope to get from the day and what your honest expectations of the franchisor are. Again, don’t be afraid to ask questions and it may be worth preparing a list of the ones you want to ask.

You also need to be aware of how much you can give in terms of time and money. Franchisors will ask you about your situation; after all, they want to know that you can deliver just as much as you want to know about how they can work for you.

The chances are you will still have questions after the event, and there is nothing wrong with that! After you’ve been on a discovery day, have a look in more detail at the market sector, what is required to succeed and above all, take time to think about whether the franchise is what you expected.
